Apple back in 'best places to work' list, Google slides in rank owing to layoffs

Owing largely to no laying offs in the previous year, Apple made it back to Glassdoor's "best places to work" list for 2024, while Google slid several ranks down.

Management consulting firm Bain & Company claimed the top spot, riding two ranks up from last year, while Nvidia secured the second position, improving from fifth.

Apple could barely put its foot in the door, ranking at a modest 39.

Other notable tech firms in the top 10 were Service Now (3), Procore Technologies (5), VMware (7), and Deltek (8).

Outside the top 10, there were tech giants such as Adobe (15), Microsoft (18), and Google (26).

However, the total number of tech firms in the top 100 fell from 41 in 2023 to 31 in 2024. Notably, Salesforce, Intel, Netflix, and Yahoo dropped out of the top 100 list in 2024, and Meta once again failed to secure a spot.

Among the newcomers in the tech category were Lenovo and Samsara.

Nvidia's second-place ranking was attributed to its impressive average rating of 4.7 out of 5 over the past year, just 0.1 behind top-ranked Bain & Company.

The competition was less tough this year, with major companies like Meta, Google, and Amazon laying off hundreds of workers across divisions.

In 2022, approximately 165,000 tech workers were laid off, with the number increasing to over 262,000 in 2023 and surpassing 3,000 in the first two weeks of January 2024 alone, according to layoffs.fyi.

Glassdoor's lead economist, Daniel Zhao told Bloomberg, "Tech has lost some of its luster versus the past year. It’s still a great industry for jobseekers, but the shine has worn off to some extent. And the companies making a comeback, they’re the old guard, so it suggests we’re heading back to a more balanced job market.”

According to Zhao, employees placed significant importance on "stability and security" in their reviews this year.

For the list, the company considered only those firms that are based in the US or the UK.
