Apple drops out of OpenAI funding round

Apple has reportedly withdrawn from a round of funding for OpenAI, which is expected to raise $6.5 billion and close by the end of the week.

The reason for the iPhone-maker dropping out of talks is unclear, however, the top-level attrition at OpenAI and the company's decision to restructure itself to a for-profit enterprise may have been something to do with it.

The latest round of funding may take OpenAI's valuation to over $100 billion.

Microsoft, which has so far pumped $13 billion into the ChatGPT-maker, looks to pledge another $1 billion. Nvidia is also reportedly in talks to participate in the current round.

Apple had earlier announced plans to integrate ChatGPT into Siri on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year.

The integration, if it comes to be, will allow Siri to give ChatGPT responses directly with user permission

The company has said that iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free without creating an account, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to access paid features on Apple devices.
