Apple found abusing position to throttle competition in India

Apple has been found to have exploited its dominant position in the Indian market for app stores by engaging in abusive conduct and practices, according to authorities.

Since 2021, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been investigating the company for possibly abusing the company's dominant position in the app market.

Apple Inc. denied the accusation and said that it is a small player in India and the market is dominated by Google's Android.

"Apple App Store is an unavoidable trading partner for app developers, and resultantly, app developers have no choice but to adhere to Apple’s unfair terms, including the mandatory use of Apple’s proprietary billing and payment system," the CCI said in its June 24 report, according to Reuters, which accessed the report.

India is not the only country where Apple has been under heat from authorities for its alleged competition throttling tactics.

In June, European Union antitrust regulators found that Apple breached the bloc's tech rules. In response to the EU law, known as the Digital Markets Act, in January, the company allowed software developers to distribute apps to users in the European Union outside the company's own app store.

The CCI investigation report is under review. Apple will be given a chance to respond before the final decision is made, which could be a monetary fine or directives to change business practices.
