Apple has agreed to pay $95 million in cash to settle a proposed class action lawsuit that claimed the firm's Siri chatbot heard on users' conversations and indulged in targeted ads.
On Tuesday, a preliminary settlement was filed in the Oakland, California federal court. It now requires approval by US District Judge Jeffrey White, Reuters reported.
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit claimed that Apple's voice-activated assistant routinely recorded their private conversations whenever indeliberately turned on and disclosed the content to third parties.
The chatbot typically reacts when people use "Hey, Siri."
According to Reuters, two of the lawsuit claimants said they started getting ads for Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants after they mentioned them when Siri was on.
The incidents cited in the suit took place between 2014 and 2024.
Plaintiffs, estimated to be in the tens of millions, may receive up to $20 each for such devices as iPhones and Apple Watches.
Apple has denied any wrongdoing while agreeing to settle.
