Elon Musk to visit India, meet Modi; likely to discuss Tesla's entry

Tesla boss Elon Musk will be visiting India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards the end of the month.

The billionaire associated with SpaceX took to his social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, to announce the visit. He although gave no specific date for the visit.

The Tesla CEO is anticipated to unveil investment initiatives in the country in the near future.

"Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India!" he wrote in a post.

India recently reduced import taxes on electric vehicles (EVs) for international car manufacturers who pledge to invest $500 million and commence local production within three years last month.

Musk had in 2021 stated that India's high import duties hindered the company from introducing its cars in the rapidly expanding Indian market.

A senior Indian government official informed the BBC that the meeting is set for the final week of April and will take place at Modi’s official residence on the Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi.

According to the British news service, Musk is likely to discuss Tesla's intentions to begin manufacturing in India during the meeting.

Musk and Modi had met last June in New York.

Musk had then said that Modi had been "pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something that we intend to do."

Tesla's decision to enter the Indian market comes against the backdrop of the company facing declining sales in both the US and China.

Musk's visit coincides with the start of six-week-long elections on April 19 in India.
