Fire halts production at iPhone component Tata plant in Tamil Nadu's Hosur

Two people were rushed to hospital and at least 10 received medical treatment after a major fire broke out at Hosur Tata Electronics plant which makes Apple iPhone components.

Production suffered disruption after the fire that broke out on Saturday near another building inside the Tata complex which will in coming months turn out complete iPhones.

On Sunday, authorities said they were going to launch a forensic investigation into the cause of a fire.

The fire was contained to one building and has been extinguished fully, top district administrative official K M Sarayu said, according to Reuters.

It is not known till when the operations will remain suspended at the factory, she said.

Sarayu said 523 workers were on shift when the fire broke out in the early morning. All workers had been evacuated.

According to a witness who lives nearby the factory, loud sounds were heard around 5.30 am followed by the sight of thick smoke rising up from the plant.

Tata Electronics is one of the major component makers of iPhones in India, along with Foxconn. The company said it was investigating the cause of the fire and would take the necessary steps to safeguard employees and other stakeholders.

"Our emergency protocols at the plant ensured that all employees are safe," a Tata Electronics spokesperson said.

It has been surmised that the blaze may have erupted due to chemical-related reasons.

Another fire last year forced Apple supplier Foxlink to halt production at its assembly facility in Andhra Pradesh that led a part of the building to collapse.
