Google, Anthropic pact under scrutiny in UK

Google-parent Alphabet’s partnership with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is facing scrutiny from Britain’s antitrust watchdog, which has invited comments on whether the pact between the two firms could lead to lessening of competition.

Agreements under scrutiny include Microsoft’s partnerships with startups like OpenAI, Inflection AI, and Mistral AI, as well as Alphabet’s ties to other smaller companies including Anthropic and Cohere, according to Reuters.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a joint statement with counterparts in the United States and the European Union, vowing to work together to safeguard fair competition in the AI industry.

Anthropic said that it had secured $500 million in investment from Google's parent company and promised another $1.5 billion over time.

On Tuesday, the CMA said it is waiting for a view on whether the Alphabet-Anthropic partnership could lessen competition in the UK, and has set a deadline of August 13 for its invitation to comment.

The CMA may launch an official investigation at the end of this process.
