Google is mulling buying cybersecurity startup Wiz for $23 billion – the largest spend by the tech giant since it bought Motorola Mobility in 2012.
Wiz is a cloud cybersecurity startup with partners that include Amazon and Oracle.
The New York City-based Wiz that likes to call itself "number 1" in cloud storage protection offers "siloed security tools and scanners" for the enterprise space.
According to the company, it secures the cloud infrastructure by "creating a normalizing layer between cloud environments," allowing businesses to "rapidly identify and remove critical risks."
The development comes at a time when rival Microsoft has suffered multiple high-profile security breaches.
According to The Verge, the man behind the move is Google Cloud boss Thomas Kurian, an Indian-American business executive who once worked with consulting firm Mckinsey and Oracle, another tech behemoth. He has been with Google since 2018.
The deal, if it goes through, will further bolster the security infrastructure of the company, which had in 2022 bought Israel-based security startup Siemplify for half a billion and later Mandient – the firm known to bring to the fore SolarWinds hack – for $5.4 billion.
