Google will spend $120 million on global AI education, says CEO Sundar Pichai

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced the global tech behemoth will spend $120 million in training people in artificial intelligence in the coming years.

Speaking at the UN Summit of the Future on Saturday, the Indian-origin executive said that Google will provide the training in several local languages, in partnership with nonprofits and NGOs.

During his address, Pichai spoke about Google's efforts in using AI to develop early flood warning system, detecting fire spots with its FireStat technology, and development of its AlphaFold software, which predicts protein structures and is expected to lead to creation of malaria vaccine, cancer treatment, and disease-resistance crops.

Pichai also said that "some studies show that AI could boost global labor productivity by 1.4 percentage points, and increase global GDP by 7 per cent, within the next decade."

He also acknowledged that AI does not come without considerable fears with its potential to create deepfake, and its concerns with "accuracy, factuality, and bias …"

Pichai called for "smart product regulation that mitigates harms and resists national protectionist impulses" to prevent the deepening of the AI divide.
