The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd to set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
The unit will come up at a cost of Rs 3,300 crore and will have the capacity to build 60 lakh chips a day, the government said in a statement on Monday.
The chips will cater to the needs of diverse industries such as automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
The manufacturing unit is in part a result of the Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India, a scheme notified on December 21, 2021 with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.
In June, 2023, the Union Cabinet had approved the first proposal for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
In February, 2024, three more semiconductor units were approved.
Tata Electronics is setting up a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, one semiconductor unit is coming up in Morigaon, Assam, while another is being set up in Sanand by CG Power.
The four units in all will bring an investment of almost Rs 1.5 lakh crore and will have the manufacturing capacity of 7 crore chips per day.
