India emerging as AI powerhouse: Haptik CEO

India is emerging as a powerhouse in the global artificial intelligence landscape, with one in every four AI-related code on Github coming from India, Haptik CEO Aakrit Vaish said during the Mumbai Tech Week.

Vaish also highlighted that every sixth AI researcher in the world is of Indian origin, underlining the nation's growing influence and expertise in AI technology while speaking to CNBC-TV18 during a panel discussion.

"One out of every four AI-related code deposits on GitHub globally comes from India. That is just amazing – 25 per cent of the code that's being written is being written over here. Every sixth researcher in AI in the world is Indian," he said.

He added, "This is like citizen-first services, and it is where I think the power of AI will first start being seen in the next few months."

Haptik is a conversational AI software that helps businesses in retail, finance, travel, hospitality, and telecommunication streamline operations.

The startup was founded in August 2013 by Aakrit Vaish (Co-founder & CEO), Swapan Rajdev (Co-founder & CTO) and Kartik Poddar (Chief business officer).

During his talk, the start-up founder gave examples of Khan Academy's AI tutor and other start-ups aiding farmers with real-time crop detection using AI tools.

Speaking on capital investment trends in startups, Vaish said that despite remaining aggressive, many investors have failed to learn from past mistakes.

He also noted the disappearance of the mid-stage investing.

"A lot of the middle stage companies will either become what we call zombies, who just remain in existence, fighting month on month, or unlike previous cycles when there were forced M&As... And then there's definitely going to be a few types of companies, even in the middle stage, who will break out and then go to the next stage, those are the ones who will clean up their act and move forward," he said.
