iPhone's next variant could be 'thinner'

Apple is gearing up for a redesign of its iconic iPhone line-up, with an overhaul in the works for a new model dubbed the "Slim" iPhone, which might also be Apple’s most expensive model.

Since the introduction of OLED and Face ID with the iPhone X back in 2017, the physical appearance of Apple's phones has remained largely unchanged.

According to a report by The Information, the changes are expected to debut as part of the iPhone 17 refresh in 2025.

Sources told The Information that Apple was exploring various design options for the upcoming high-end model. These options include considerations such as using an aluminium frame, reducing the size of the hole and cut-out for the front-facing camera hardware, and positioning the rear cameras in the centre.

Another potential feature being discussed is an energy density upgrade, previously rumoured by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Kuo suggests that if the trial of a new design featuring a stainless steel battery case proves successful, it could potentially be adopted across all models by 2025.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Haitong International analyst Jeff Pu has suggested that the upcoming iPhone 17 models might come with a refreshed design featuring a smaller Dynamic Island.

The speculation follows rumours of a size increase and a new side button for the iPhone 16 line-up later this year.

The rumoured "Slim" iPhone 17 is expected to sport a 6.6-inch display, positioned between the 6.1-inch screen of the smallest version and the 6.9-inch screen of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Another report, attributed to analyst Ross Young, suggests that the new display size could be around 6.55 inches.
