Meta testing AI chatbot for WhatsApp in India, other markets

Instant messaging app WhatsApp is currently testing Meta AI, a chatbot fuelled by a large language model, among users in India and other key markets.

The move reflects the platform's aim to harness its vast user base for expanding its AI services with India being its largest market.

Meta AI chatbot was previously only available in select markets like the US.

"Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity," a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Last September, Meta introduced Meta AI, its versatile virtual assistant, which is engineered to provide direct responses to user inquiries within conversations, along with the capability to produce lifelike images based on text prompts.

WhatsApp has more than 2 billion active users globally. Meta can use this to make its AI bigger. By integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp, it can expose its advanced language model and image generation capabilities to a huge audience base, maybe more than any other company's AI.
