Microsoft has included several AI startups, including Anthropic and OpenAI, in the list of competitors in the company's latest annual report.
The mention of OpenAI, a partner of Microsoft in artificial intelligence efforts, betrays a crease in the relationship between the two companies.
"Our AI offerings compete with AI products from hyperscalers such as Amazon and Google, as well as products from other emerging competitors, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and other open source offerings, many of which are also current or potential partners," Microsoft said in the report.
The company has a long-term partnership with Open AI. It is an exclusive cloud provider to OpenAI and has been using AI models in its products for commercial purposes.
Microsoft is the biggest investor in OpenAI and has invested $ 13 billion.
Some companies prefer to pay OpenAI for access to its models while others choose Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service. Microsoft's Copilot Chatbox is also available via the Bing search engine and in the Windows operating system as an alternative to ChatGPT.
An OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC that the relationship between the two companies has not changed and their partnership is based on the understanding that they will compete.
Microsoft remains a good partner to OpenAI, the spokesperson added.
