Microsoft-backed OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will leave the AI firm after her six-and-a-half year stay, the executive said in a post on X.
Murati served as OpenAI CEO in November 2023 when the company's board sacked co-founder Sam Altman in a shock move, leading to a split among employees and a dramatic comeback of Altman.
The Albania-born engineer oversaw the most spectacular phases of the company, from its being an ambitious start-up to its becoming the very byword in the world of bleeding edge artificial intelligence.
"I'm stepping away because I want to create time and solace to do my own exploration. For now, my primary focus is doing everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition," Murati said in her post.
Her departure comes not so long after former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever left the company amid speculations of a rift between him and Altman.
Murati has often made often predictions that AI will render certain types of jobs obsolete.
In an interview earlier in June at Dartmouth Engineering, Murati said AI will replace some of the creative jobs, and the reason will be that they are dispensable anyway.
"I think it's really going to be a collaborative tool, especially in the creative spaces," Murati told Dartmouth University Trustee Jeffrey Blackburn in an interview, a snippet of which was shared by X user @tsarnick.
No announcement has yet been made who will replace Murati.
