OpenAI is in discussions with chip designers including Broadcom to develop a new AI chip to overcome the shortage of expensive graphic processing units that it depends on to develop its AI models.
The Microsoft-backed company is hiring Google employees who produced the tensor processing unit, for the manufacture of an AI server chip.
"OpenAI is having ongoing conversations with industry and government stakeholders about increasing access to the infrastructure needed to ensure AI’s benefits are widely accessible," a spokesperson for OpenAI told The Information, according to Reuters.
Bloomberg News had earlier this year reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was planning to set up factories to manufacture semiconductors with chipmakers Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, and Samsung Electronics as potential partners.
