OpenAI, Meta discuss AI partnership with India’s Reliance Industries

OpenAI and Meta Platforms have held separate discussions with India’s Reliance Industries regarding potential partnerships to expand their artificial intelligence offerings in the country. 

According to a report by technology news website The Information, possibilities were explored involving a partnership between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT across India. 

OpenAI has also internally discussed lowering the ChatGPT subscription price from $20 per month to just a few dollars, though it remains unclear whether this pricing strategy has been formally proposed to Reliance, the report said.

Reliance has also explored selling OpenAI’s models to its enterprise customers through an application programming interface (API). In addition, discussions have taken place about hosting and running OpenAI models locally to ensure that Indian customer data remains within the country.

Reliance's Plans for AI Infrastructure

Reliance, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has discussed running AI models from both OpenAI and Meta within its upcoming three-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company has touted this as the largest data centre in the world, reinforcing its commitment to artificial intelligence and data sovereignty.

ChatGPT's Challenges in the AI Market

OpenAI's latest ChatGPT reasoning model, GPT-4-turbo, aims to provide more cost-efficient and faster AI responses compared to its predecessors. However, the company continues to face high operational costs associated with running large-scale AI models. The computational expense of maintaining ChatGPT remains a challenge, with each response incurring substantial processing costs.

Moreover, OpenAI continues to struggle to compete with China's DeepSeek, which has been developing AI systems optimised for efficiency and scalability.
