The Pokémon Company on Thursday said it will investigate allegations of plagiarism against the burgeoning online multiplayer sensation Palworld, which has gained a massive following since its launch last week.
The Pokémon Company said it has not authorised the use of its intellectual property or assets by another company, without naming Pocketpair Inc, the creator of Palworld.
In a statement posted on its website, Pokémon Company said, "We have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024. We have not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game."
It added, "We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon. We will continue to cherish and nurture each and every Pokémon and its world, and work to bring the world together through Pokémon in the future."
Since its launch on January 19, Palworld has become quite a rage am, having been downloaded more than 8 million times.
Diehard Pokémon fans have accused the game of being a rip-off of original monster-taming game that was Pokémon.
Due to its apparent similarity, Palworld got the nickname "Pokémon with guns" when its first trailer came out in 2021.
