Samsung on Thursday launched its latest lineup of Galaxy phones, strong on AI-enabled features, as it seeks to regain the top phone-maker spot it recently lost to Apple.
Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 are the three variants of the lineup launched at today's Unpacked event.
TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics said, "The Galaxy S24 series transforms our connection with the world and ignites the next decade of mobile innovation."
He added, "Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open up new possibilities."
The new S24 smartphones will have a unique feature called Live Translation. It lets you have a phone call with someone who speaks a different language, and the phone will translate the conversation for both of you in real-time, i.e. a two-way voice translation.
The feature is available in 13 languages, and it's made possible by Samsung's own AI training.
At a recent event, the company showcased the technology by making a restaurant reservation, demonstrating how you can make a call in a language you don't know and get live translations both by hearing them and seeing them on the screen.
It's like having a conversation with someone who speaks a different language, but the phone helps you understand each other instantly. The feature will also remember the languages you like and the languages your friends speak, the South Korean electronics giant said in a statement.
"It’s like having your own personal interpreter on your calls," said Samsung VP of Product Management, Drew Blackard.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series comes with a feature called 'circle to search,' powered by Google, which allows users to launch a search by drawing a circle on screen.
Depending on where you are, the phone can use AI to give you overviews and info from the web for certain searches.
AI translation and changing message tones to casual, formal, business, or social media style are some of the other features the line comes equipped with.
The ProVisual Engine9 in the Galaxy S24 series is like a powerful toolbox of AI tools for taking and sharing pictures. It makes a big difference in how you capture images, from getting ready to take a photo to sharing it on social media. Samsung said.
The Nightography feature has been improved, making photos and videos taken with the Galaxy S24 Space Zoom look amazing in any lighting, especially in low-light conditions.
This means it's easier to capture more details even in dim light conditions, the company said.
On-device AI means that smart functions are downloaded to your device after being trained, and they work without needing to connect to the internet.
Companies such as Qualcomm and Samsung are promoting on-device AI because it's seen as more secure for your personal information. This is because it doesn't have to send your data to the internet or cloud for processing.
