Snapchat reserves right to use AI version of people's selfies for ads

Snapchat may use an AI generated version of your picture in ads targeted at users without your overt consent or paying you any monetary compensation, its terms and conditions have revealed.

The condition came to the fore in Snapchat's rules for use of its "My Selfie" tool, which lets people create artificial intelligence-generated images that are trained on their selfies.

"My Selfie is used to power Generative AI, Cameos and other experiences on Snapchat that feature you, including ads," reads a pop up in the Snapchat app.

"My Selfie uses your images and information to do this."

According to Snapchat's terms and conditions, if a user opts for "My Selfie" feature, the person grants Snap "our affiliates, other users of the Services, and our business partners an unrestricted, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable and perpetual right" to use the content, or any of its derivation "for commercial and non-commercial purposes."

The feature is turned on by default in the app, but one has the option to turn it off.

A Snapchat spokesperson told 404 Media, which originally reported the matter, that the company does "reserve the right, in the future, to offer advertising based on My Selfies in which a Snapchatter can see themselves in a generated image delivered to them."

"As explained in the onboarding modal, Snapchatters have full control over this, and can turn this on and off in My Selfie Settings at any time," the person said.

Snapchat also said that its users' private data is protected from advertisers.

India has the highest number of Snapchat users in the world at 202 million, according to website Statista.
