SpaceX to launch 5 uncrewed mission to Mars in 2 years

SpaceX is going to launch about five uncrewed Starship missions to Mars in the next two years, Elon Musk said on Sunday in a post on X.

Musk had earlier this month said that the first Starships to Mars will be launched in two years, predicting the red planet will have a human-inhabited city in 20 years.

The SpaceX CEO said the crewed mission's launch date will depend upon the success of the uncrewed flights.

If the uncrewed missions land safely, crewed missions will be launched in four years, Musk said, else it will take another two years, since "It is only possible to travel from Earth to Mars every two years, when the planets are aligned."

Musk had earlier this year said the first people will land on Mars within seven years.

In June, a Starship rocket achieved a breakthrough landing demonstration in the Indian Ocean, completing a full test mission on the rocket's fourth try.

Musk is aiming at perfecting the Starship reusable rocket to fly people and cargo to the moon this decade, and to Mars later.

The billionaire also rued the slow pace of his projects, which he attributed to "stifling red tape."
