Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is not personally liable for children becoming addicted to social media, as alleged in 25 lawsuits, a US judge has said.
US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California on Thursday rejected allegations that Zuckerberg was behind the concealment from children that there were serious mental health risks of using Facebook and Instagram.
According to the plaintiffs, the billionaire co-founder was the "guiding spirit" behind alleged concealment and he ignored repeated internal warnings about the risks.
The judge however wasn't impressed with the claims and said "control of corporate activity alone is insufficient" to establish liability.
All the same, the decision does not affect related claims against Meta itself.
The claims against Meta have been brought under law in 13 US states – Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The lawsuits are seeking damages from Meta, Alphabet's Google, ByteDance's TikTok and Snap's Snapchat over social media addiction.
